The 2011 protocols represent hundreds of hours of work by EMS physicians and providers. The most obvious difference is the change in format from "decision-tree" to "linear with stop signs". This format is used by most other New York State Regions and provided the most standardized format for accommodating the breadth of our protocols. In an effort to build a well-rounded and comprehensive document, the protocols include EMT-B treatment references and key considerations.

It is the responsibility of each agency to ensure its providers have completed a regionally approved protocol in-service. All advanced EMTs (Intermediate, Critical Care, Paramedic) must complete a protocol in-service. In an effort to develop a working knowledge of the protocols, Basic EMTs are encouraged (not required) to complete a protocol in-service.

Once appropriate in-services are complete, agencies may begin using the new protocols after June 1, 2011. All advanced providers must complete an approved WREMAC protocol in-service by September 1, 2011 or the provider will be taken "off line".

The protocol in-service will include several modules with a corresponding test. Providers must complete the module specific to the level of care and pass the test with a minimum score of 70%. The protocol modules are as follows:

  • Intermediate

  • 1. Introduction, Format and Operations    [PowerPoint]    [Video]
  • 2. Intermediate Level Protocol Review    [PowerPoint]    [Video]
  • EMT-CC and Paramedic:

  • 1. Introduction, Format and Operations    [PowerPoint]    [Video]
  • 2. Medical and Respiratory    [PowerPoint]    [Video]
  • 3. Trauma    [PowerPoint]    [Video]
  • 4. Cardiac    [PowerPoint]    [Video]
    • There are a number of methods in which a provider may complete the WREMAC protocol in-service.

      • 1. Video driven.
        • a.   Providers may log-in to the WREMAC Web site, watch the videos, and complete the on-line protocol test; or
        • b.   The program agency serving your region has the option of conducting an in-service using WREMAC provided training videos.
      • 2. Live In-service. Your agency medical director (or his/her designee), with the WREMAC Chairman.s approval, may provide live in-services using the WREMAC PowerPoint. All others may use the WREMAC Power Point with their agencies to supplement, but not in place of the WREMAC videos.
